I was having mixed thoughts about likes (and engagement). I wrote about this too.
But I can't ignore that thumbing-up someone's BearBlog post or hearting a photo on Pixelfed, feels good and I do it with the idea of "Nice! I see you!". Either because it's beautiful, for bravery of opening up or just for recognizing the effort it took.
